It's one of those great horror movies that's so awful it's fantastic, and Leprechaun is one of those movies. The storyline is completely off the rails, the acting is over the top, and the visual effects are so awful they're laughable. In spite of this, though, everything comes together in a way that results in an enjoyable and engaging movie. Jennifer Aniston's performance in her first picture is unexpectedly strong, and Warwick Davis is fantastic in the role he plays as the leprechaun. It is highly recommended that you see Leprechaun if you like goofy horror films like those that it is based on. Just don't go into it expecting to be frightened since the chances are far higher that this movie will make you chuckle than scream.Legend has it that Warwick Davis played a furious leprechaun. In the film, a leprechaun thinks a family stole his riches. He uses his cleverness and might to find them. Dan O'Grady goes back to his home in North Dakota in 1983 after visiting his birthplace, Ireland, where he kidnapped a leprechaun and stole his pot of gold. After O'Grady buried the treasure, he found out that the bad leprechaun had followed him home and killed his wife. O'Grady uses a four-leaf clover to stop the leprechaun's magic and put him in a box. He had a stroke before he could set him on fire.
J. D. Redding leases the O'Grady farmhouse for the summer with his teenage daughter Tory ten years later. The farmhouse is being repainted by contract workers Nathan Murphy, his 10-year-old brother Alex, and their dimwitted friend Ozzie Jones. While scouring the basement, Ozzie hears the leprechaun's cry for help and misidentifies him as a little child. By removing the old four-leaf clover from the box, he frees the leprechaun. Ozzie learns from the leprechaun that he is an Irish shoemaker who came to America in quest of his riches. Ozzie spots a rainbow and follows it in the hopes of finding a pot of gold after failing to convince the others that he had seen a leprechaun. Alex follows him because he is afraid Ozzie may hurt himself. A bag holding 100 gold coins appears before Ozzie by magic. They bury the riches in an ancient well after Ozzie investigates it and mistakenly swallows a coin in the hopes of healing Ozzie's brain.
J. D. gets tricked by a leprechaun on the farm into walking into a trap by the leprechaun posing as a cat and biting his hand, causing him pain. After Tory and the others have brought the leprechaun to the hospital, he rides away on a three-wheeled bicycle. When Alex and Ozzie proceed to a pawn shop to determine the authenticity of the gold, the leprechaun kills the store's proprietor, Joe, for stealing his gold, and then polishes Joe's shoes before fleeing the scene. When the leprechaun was on his way back to the farm, he decided to build himself a go-kart but was pulled over by the police officer because he was going too fast. The officer is chased by the leprechaun into the woods, where the leprechaun eventually takes his life at the hands of the officer. The leprechaun returns to the farm and begins searching for his treasure while also polishing the shoes of everyone he encounters. After accompanying J. D. to the medical facility, the group makes their way back to the farmhouse. When Nathan goes outside to investigate after discovering that it has been plundered, he is hurt by a bear trap that was placed by a leprechaun. Outside, the mob launches an assault on the leprechaun and begins to beat him with rocks and clubs.
Leprechaun is shot multiple times after a gun is found in the house. After it fails, they attempt to depart, but the leprechaun has wrecked the truck's engine. Leprechaun terrorizes the group until Ozzie reveals he and Alex found the pot of gold. The bag is rescued from the well by Tory, who gives it to the leprechaun. They head to the hospital sure the worst is over. Leprechaun assesses his fortune and finds he's missing the coin Ozzie ate. He confronts them, thinking they fooled him, until Ozzie tells them O'Grady had a stroke and was hospitalized. By throwing dirty shoes at the leprechaun, the gang diverts his attention, and he's obliged to shine them while Tory drives off in her jeep. To kill the leprechaun, Tory visits the residence.
At the nursing home, the leprechaun pretends to be O'Grady. The leprechaun follows Tory to an elevator and throws O'Grady's bloody body down the elevator shaft as Tory runs away. Before he dies, O'Grady tells her that the only way to kill the leprechaun is with a four-leaf clover, which grows in a big patch right outside the farm. Tory goes back to the farmhouse to look for a clover, but the leprechaun attacks her, and Nathan and Ozzie save her. The leprechaun gets seriously hurt while trying to get the last gold coin, which Ozzie admits he ate. Alex puts a four-leaf clover that Tory found on a wad of gum and fires it into the leprechaun's mouth. This melts the leprechaun before he can kill Ozzie. Even though the leprechaun's skeleton fell into the well, it gets out and says, "I want my gold." After Nathan pushes the leprechaun back into the well, he lights both objects on fire with gasoline. When the police show up, Tory is reunited with her father. She then marries Nathan and they have a child. It's well-known that George Lucas had a role in casting Warwick Davis in Willow. What's less well-known is the reason why. Apparently, Davis was under contract to Lucas, and Lucas had to provide authorization for him to appear in the movie. As a consequence, he was granted a "special thanks" credit at the conclusion of the film. This little-known truth makes the movie much more appealing for horror movie enthusiasts. Leprechauns were meant to return to Ireland. Warwick Davis, who played the leprechaun, lacked a work visa. Davis required a visa in three days to shoot the last scene, an impossible job.
